Family Grievance

Friday from the Archives: “Big Joy Family” a short story by Jude Whelchel from NCLR Online 2015.

With Doris Betts Fiction Prize submissions opening in 3 days, we thought a short story from that contest would be a good post for today. And this one, which received Honorable Mention in the Betts contest, received second place for storySouth‘s Million Writers Award.

Jude Whelchel is an Episcopal Priest and writer from Asheville, NC. She has an MFA from Warren Wilson College. In 2014, she was a finalist in the Betts contest, as well as one of two first-place winners for the 2014 Thomas Wolf Fiction Prize.

No spoilers. We’ll leave you to read this timely tale of an overseas adoption knowing nothing else about it (except it is still one of the editor’s all time favorite stories). View within the gorgeous layout of the story (by our Art Director Dana Ezzell) fine art by Mona Wu.

Read the entire short story in our here. Then pull out on that short story you’ve been working on, and get it ready to submit between September 15 and October 31.

The Doris Betts Fiction Prize is sponsored by the North Carolina Writers’ Network.
