Vernon reviews Powell

Saturday Review: “To Love The South Surgically” a review by Zackary Vernon in NCLR Online Winter 2024 of The Late Rebellion (2024) by Mark Powell.

It’s a rare pleasure for us to be able to review a book before its general release: mainly because we always need more reviewers for the books already on the growing list. (Not-so-subtle hint, we’d love to have you join our reviewer team!)

Powell’s The Late Rebellion can be pre-ordered now. Zackary Vernon, whose interview with Powell will be in our print issue this summer, says about the App State professor’s latest novel, “The Late Rebellion showcases Powell’s deep understanding of Southern cultures as well as his ability to distill the nuances of
American life when everything around us seems precarious.”

Powell’s work generally takes current events as formidable plot elements, and this latest is no different in using blood and chosen family to discuss present-day American. Vernon points out, “Powell’s novel powerfully interrogates how we got here and maybe also how we can improve.”
