The First Applewhite Prize Poem: John Thomas York

Friday from the Archives: “Lamp” by John Thomas York, the first Applewhite Prize winning poem from NCLR 21 (2012)

Time is running out to submit to either the Applewhite (written) Poetry Prize or the Jaki Shelton Green Performance Poetry Prize contests! Submit your unpublished original work by April 30th!

John Thomas York was our first James Applewhite Poetry Prize contest winner in 2011, with “Lamp” published in our 2012 print issue. He continues to write poetry from his home in Greensboro, NC.

We love publishing multiple pieces by an author as it serves to see themes or critical points in their body of work. The path from “Lamp” to York’s Alex Albright Creative Nonfiction Prize-winning piece “Seven Years On A Farm”, published in our 2018 issue, is not that far.
