Trzepacz reviews Bare

Saturday Review: “Amethyst Eyes” a review by Abby Trzepacz in NCLR Online Spring 2024 of Micki Bare’s novel Blind Fairy (2023)

A sequel to Bare’s Society of the Sentinelia, the 2022 AAUW NC Young People’s Literature Award winner, her book Blind Fairy is a tale of magic and woodland whimsy. Trzepacz states, “Bare successfully weaves magical elements with characteristics of her home state, exploring environmental stewardship, friendship, and self-confidence within this fantastical coming of-age story.”

Trzepacz doesn’t play coy with the details of this magical land. She writes of amethyst-eyed heart animals, meant to help fairies along on their journeys, and a sleep-inducing swarm of cicadas that threatens the lives of those scraebin who live amongst the forest. Bare’s story follows Zahra, whose lineage finds her being a scraebin (a weather sprite) and a fairy, who learns she has a special role of “The Convener.” Trzepacz writes “In spite of the magical world of Blind Fairy, readers will relate to Zahra’s self-confidence issues and find her friendships familiar.”
