Saturday Review: “A Journey Through Unseen Worlds” a review by Amber Knox in NCLR Online Spring 2025 of Michele Tracy Berger’s story collection Doll Seed and Other Stories (2024)
Michele Tracy Berger’s Doll Seed and Other Stories “immerses her audience in worlds both uncannily familiar and terrifyingly alien.” In this collection, Berger explores a wide range of settings and situations that offers her readers a glimpse into “the trauma and strength of the human psyche.”
Knox’s review of the unique and powerful imaginative journey highlights the humanity of Berger’s characters and the inspirational quality of even her darkest stories. They contain both “fundamental themes of the degrading effects inequality and prejudice as well as the strength of human endurance.” As many science fiction stories have before, Berger uses significant aspects of Black history paired with other-worldly characters to highlight current events. As Knox states, “these stories refuse to be left behind, haunting the reader long after the book is closed.”
